Let’s face it, Hollywood loves remaking past movies that were really good. I kinda half expected that today, some studio would “celebrate” by announcing a remake. Thankfully that has not happened...but what if it did? What car would they choose?

I think a smart fortwo would be a great contender.

Kinja'd!!!

Why? Well I’ll tell you why!

It’s slow

While the DeLorean being slow was never a central plot element, getting the car to 88mph definitely was a big deal throughout much of the trilogy. Assuming a new movie wouldn’t change the speed (188 mph would also be hard), I think choosing a car that has to work hard to reach the desired speed could definitely be a good thing. A sportscar can get to 88 no sweat, but a smart will work its ass off.

It does also have that rear engine, rear drive setup as well.

It’s unique

Outside of sportscars, there are few cars that you can buy new in America that are plastic-bodied. The exposed safety cell element is also something that could be played around with as well with the function of the Flux Capacitor (like the stainless steel of the DMC). There also aren’t too many of them on the road either, so they still turn heads. The DMC is a car that would be undesirable for most people, just like a smart.

A supercar or a luxury car would be just too much of a generic choice.

It breaks easily

Another plot element to BTTF was the fact that the DeLorean pretty much only worked when it felt liked it...It wouldn’t start, Doc tried running some homemade fuel in it, etc etc. A super reliable car wouldn’t be fun...it wouldn’t create any tense moments. The early 451s were problematic, everything from broken transmissions to bad engines in a few cases.

What do you think Oppo?

Can we please all agree that BTTF is perfect and should not be remade, ever?

Yes. Yes, we can. And if i had a time machine, I would go back and kill whoever started the remake of The Karate Kid before they could ruin that movie too...right after I killed Hitler, of course.

No Need.

It can be sequel-added.

Doc Brown had a flying steam-engine time machine at the end...

Tie something to that loose end, and the saga continues.

Kinja'd!!!

If Doc can build that... he can build another car, or whatever else, also.

(they should never remake it but) OK, I’ll play along -

If they needed a new contemporary vehicle for Time Traveling - they have one perfect candidate

Fisker Karma

I would go with a Fisker Karma. A limited production car from a failed company named after its charismatic founder that collapsed amid some political intrigue, and featured some novel technologies but ultimately wasn’t quite as good as all the hype. Plus, they could make up some crap about needing the electric motors to help power the time circuits or something.
